A God Who Makes Covenant
The LORD was pleased to make covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. More than that, He is the God of each one of us. He is not distant from His people; He draws near in promise and in faithfulness.
At Sinai — Fire and Voice
At Mount Sinai, for the first time in history, God spoke to so great a multitude. Moses recalled that scene in Deuteronomy:
“The LORD spoke to you face to face from the fire on the mountain.”
He gave the Ten Commandments, and the people heard the words of God. Scripture says:
“When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance and said to Moses, ‘Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.’”
“Your God” — Personal and Redemptive
Yet the LORD spoke in the second person singular: “I am the LORD your God.” He showed that His covenant is not only with a nation of millions, but with each person who belongs to Him.
He is the same toward us who are under the new covenant. The blood of Jesus Christ establishes a covenant first with every soul who trusts Him for salvation — not only with a crowd, but with you.
He is not only the One who led Israel out of Pharaoh’s political and economic bondage in Egypt; He is Lord of the whole people — and the personal God and Redeemer of every Israelite who came out of Egypt.
Spoken to You Today
What He said to Israel, He speaks to everyone who will trust in Jesus Christ:
“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of sin — your Egypt — and delivered you from slavery under the devil.”
Every Christian born again by grace should know something of that escape — freedom from the tyranny of Satan and sin. To that deliverance we say, Amen.
Please wait a moment…
May the Lord bless you.
